Hats off to VICE for their new documentary short investigating the Uruguay marijuana initiative. There can’t be a better way to start a video than with the line: “I’m smoking weed with the president of Uruguay on his farm outside of Montevideo,” as the video pans to President José “Pepe” Mujica actually sitting right next to VICE correspondent Krishna Andavolu smoking a joint. This is well worth a half-hour of your time:

At the end of 2013, Uruguay became the first country in the world to fully legalize marijuana. VICE correspondent Krishna Andavolu headed over to Uruguay to check out how the country is adjusting to a legally regulated marijuana market. Along the way, he meets up with Uruguay’s president, José Mujica, to burn one down and talk about the president’s goal of a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage, and six cannabis plants per household. The president of Uruguay has also been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. According to his advocates, José “Pepe” Mujica’s much talked-about marijuana legalization is in fact “a tool for peace and understanding.”
